Southampton face Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League season and they have a great chance to record an opening day win. Southampton finished in 8th place last season and while a break into the top seven may be difficult, especially with the money Everton are spending, they will start hopeful of breaking into that somehow.
The Saints have kept a similar squad to the one they had last season and that should stand them well in the early games. They have no problems with new players adapting to the league and no need to work out a new formation to play. One player they have brough in is new record signing Mario Lemina who joins from Juventus. The central midfielder will eventually play a big part for Southampton I think, although I doubt we will see too much of him in the opening games as he has only just arrived at the club
Swansea haven’t made too many changes either, which is surprising considering how much they looked in trouble at Christmas last season. One player who they have brought in is Roque Mesa, who will be tasked with replacing the departing Jack Cork who has signed for Burnely. He may take time to adapt to the Premier League but will quickly need to come in and replace the battling skills of Cork, especially in tough away games like this one.
Southampton are by far the better team here and I think they are capable of winning this game. I am surprised Swansea haven’t strengthened much during the summer and that may come back to haunt them later in the season. They struggled last season and unless they do somethng drastic soon, I can see them struggling again this season. ]
Southampton look on course for another top ten finish this season and they can start that with a win here at 8/13.
